Miha Zupanc Kovač is a Slovenian conductor dedicated to work with both orchestras and choirs, known for his stylistic clarity, historically informed performance practice, and collaborative rehearsal approach. Based in Ljubljana, he is actively involved in a variety of concert projects and leads several vocal-instrumental ensembles.
He studied orchestral conducting at the Academy of Music, University of Ljubljana, where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees under the mentorship of Simon Dvoršak and Marko Letonja. Alongside his conducting studies, he pursued music pedagogy and voice, laying a solid foundation for his work with vocal ensembles.
During his formative years, he gained valuable stage experience as assistant conductor and répétiteur for several opera and operetta productions, working on works by Handel, Bernstein, and Puccini, among others.
Since 2019, Zupanc Kovač has served as the artistic director and conductor of the Symphony 23 Orchestra, an ensemble comprising alumni of the Diocesan Classical Gymnasium in Ljubljana. In 2022, he was appointed conductor of the Grex Symphoniacorum Orchestra of the University of Ljubljana, and in 2024 became its chief conductor and artistic director. Under his leadership, the ensemble has embraced increasingly ambitious programs, including symphonic works and large-scale collaborations with university choirs.
In the choral field, he has led a wide range of ensembles. Since 2023, he has conducted the Academic Choir of St. Cecilia, and he also directs the Tromostovje Vocal Group, a male ensemble dedicated to sacred music performed both liturgically and in concert. From 2017 to 2024, he led the Youth Choir of the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, and since 2018 he has served as assistant conductor and répétiteur with the Slovenian Children’s Choir. His experience also includes working with various school, youth, and project-based choirs.
A hallmark of his artistic vision is the realization of vocal-instrumental projects that unite choirs and orchestras in meaningful musical experiences. These include annual performances of mass settings, oratorios, and concert appearances at major festivals and cultural series across Slovenia.
His conducting career extends internationally, with performances and collaborations in Brussels, Vienna, Toronto, Budapest, and beyond.
